so, I just finished s4 of Angel

ngl, I'm disappointed with that finale 😂

I made a post at the beginning of the season (around episode 6-ish I think) and said that it's pretty bad so far and it was difficult to get through it - but then about halfway through it got soooo much better

we had Angelus, and Faith, and then the whole Jasmine thing which was so great

but then her death was kinda whatever and I can't believe it was that easy (if not easy then for sure quick) - she just seemed like a bigger threat, especially with all that build up and the pregnancy and all that idk

and I love that Lilah came back for the finale, and it's interesting that they got Wolfram & Hart, I'm curious as to how the last season is gonna look like

but the episode in itself wasn't that great of a finale sns, wasn't all that exciting, I didn't give a fuck about Connor's storyline (well, I cared about Angel and his feelings and worries, Connor not so much) and the tour of W&H didn't feel all finale idk 😂 - but it is interesting how Connor ended up this episode ngl

when it comes to the overall season.... it was interesting. it wasn't all bad, but there were things that I just couldn't stand. like, the whole Cordy and Connor thing made me sick and so uncomfortable I could barely watch their scenes. I don't like Connor in general sns. also, I don't know why but Wes and Fred make me uncomfortable too and I actually skip their scenes alone and will continue to do so, because I don't like where this seems to be going - I hate that Fred and Gunn broke up, but pls let her be single or find anyone else but Wes lmao

and I know that they were writing Cordy out bc Charisma got fired, but they did it... in a pretty bad way ngl, both Cordy and Charisma deserved so much better

but I did like all the Angel and Angelus stuff, Angelus and Jasmine were my highlights for sure (I fucking love Gina Torres), and generally the second half of the season was pretty good 💁🏻‍♀️

ngl, I kinda can't remember much that happened in the first half of the season 😂

overall I think I mostly enjoyed it, tho it was hard to get through the bad parts to get to the fun stuff haha

well, I hear that s5 is better, so can't wait to get to that haha

This is a super hot take but my personal opinion is that the longest bad stretch in ats s4 is Ground State-Supersymmetry; I actually enjoy the perfect happiness dream.

The thing about Awakening that I like is that when you are rewatching it it is really easy to pick up on the rather large number of clues that this is not real.

The trick is is that since the episodes around it are also written poorly, Awakening suffers. The bad writing in the episode is the point; this isn't a real narrative but Angel's wish fulfillment. But when it is in a string of bad episodes (Habeas Corpses, Long Day's Journey, Soulless, Calvary) it becomes easy to not see the bad writing as intentional.

In general I think ats s4 has reasonably good episodes in a vacuum let down by the overall plot being a train wreck you know is coming. I find I can't enjoy rewatching individual episodes because of the heavy serialization and the horrible overarching plot. The Faith and Angel arc is good but exists in a broader context that is hard to ignore.

So we saw Tammy Thompson sing the national anthem in the first episode of s4...

Which prompted Robin and Steve to give each other looks because they remembered Robin's coming out moment in the bathroom, where they made fun of Tammy's singing...

Vickie overheard them joking, and Robin took the opportunity to talk to her, saying that she "used to think that Tammy sounded good because I had this massive crush—um, we took a massively hard class together. We were in Mrs. Click's class together," reminding the audience of Robin's explanation that, in the class, she wanted Tammy to look at her, while Tammy only looked at Steve.

So episodes later, in the boat out on Lovers Lake, where Robin looked at Nancy looking at Steve? Yeah. This was a direct callback.

And it's interesting that even though Robin's crush was specifically mentioned when talking to Vickie, it's this scene with Nancy that we see what Robin referenced in action.

But the question is: why do any of this?

Even though Robin said Vickie is the girl of her dreams, we saw Vickie for approximately 3 min of s4, and it's within the last 20 min of the final episode that they had their first actual on-screen conversation. Meanwhile, Robin had been glued to Nancy's side all season. The writers are smart, they could've inserted Vickie into the main group at any point, to give her and Robin a chance to bond, and to develop their relationship. It's been done before with other characters. If anything, it seems like the last thing the writers would want is to give clear preferential treatment to Robin's dynamic with a character who's (supposedly) not meant to be a love interest for her (especially in the season where the actual love interest is first introduced, and the audience has been mentally prepped for Robin to have romantic interactions). I'm not saying Robin can't have platonic female friends, I'm just pointing out interesting writing choices, and the usage of show vs tell.

Ignore my previous post. My favorite character isn't Homelander anymore - it's this guy.

I'm so serious.

I've rewatched this scene about a dozen times now simply because I get a kick out of seeing 'Homelander' moving so freely / fluidly. Don't get me wrong, I love how composed the real Homelander is (almost) all the time. Hands behind his back, sometimes on his hips if he's feeling really sassy. . .

But I tend to draw him in some very exaggerated poses ( flaunting some pretty out-there color palettes ) so getting to see an iteration of him moving so animatedly while wearing this delighted me on what can only be described as a primal level.

I know we got flashbacks, but I want more 😂 as much as I love Angel, I'm so happy Angelus is back for now haha
